The sticker-based nine digit scheme lasted through July 1997. Even though I've had this amp for a few north so far I've had the bass just about all the way up and the treble and presence usually aren't higher then 4 or 5. These current serial numbers are arranged in a letter-ten digits-letter format A-xxxx-xx-xxxx-A. Dropping 6L6's into the Marshall will make it fatter but then it won't pan like a Marshall. I've heard a few SLX's and those sounded good if your into the high gain thing but were still a little buzzy for my tastes. These are still found on stickers with a bar code on the back of the amp.

Is there a website or anything where I can figure out how old a Marshall amp is? I just scored a 2205 which is a JCM 800 two channel 50 watter with 'verb. I was about to buy a JCM 2000 DSL 50 watter but I decided to have lunch first so I went to Wendys. Well, on the way back to Scam Cash I decided to stop in Banjo Sinner for a quick look around and there it was. I played, I pulled out the cash for a deposit and I'm bringing it home tomorrow night. So now the big question is, how old is it? I checked and there's nothing there to figure that out. Thanks for the link. According to that the amp was made in 1984. I had been wanting a Marshall for a long time. I've got some other cool stuff here like a VHT Pitbull, Vox, Sound City 120 might be for sale BTW Boogie etc. Almost three years ago I let a single channel 800 slip through my fingers because it was a 100 watt and I wanted a 50. Rather then pull a pair of power tubes I figured I'd look around and find another one in a month or two. Well, the next ones I saw had insane IMHO pricetags on them. Getting an old Plexi was out of the question due to pricing and the fact that they're tempermental as hell. I had recorded and played through the 2000's a few times and really liked the DSL which sounds much fatter and more focused then the TSL. The 900's are crap IMHO, at least all of the dual channel ones I've played. I've heard a few SLX's and those sounded good if your into the high gain thing but were still a little buzzy for my tastes. Yeah, I'm happy with the 800. Sounds like a Marshall. When we recorded we used a Marshall cab in stereo, Mesa on one side, my Marshall JCM 800 on the other. Both close miced with 57's going into Millennia HV-3's. Guess which one they picked blindly every time?? Not like they were experienced connesiours of tone, but it makes me feel better knowing that I own the Marshall and not the Mesa. I'm not saying the Marshall is the end all of tone, but one color I prefer. Ian the new fu manchu has the 2k's on it... JIMI used them too. Oranges just kick total ass. Dropping 6L6's into the Marshall will make it fatter but then it won't sound like a Marshall. I don't know if that's a good thing for you or not. Personally I think it's bad because I like the EL34 midrange bite in a Marshall. I have 6L6's in my Dual Rectifier and Carvin X100B if I want that kind of sound. Even though I've had this amp for a few days so far I've had the bass just about all the way up and the treble and presence usually aren't higher then 4 or 5. Any higher then that and your right, it gets thin and bright. I know Orange but what's the deal with Matamp? Seeing as this is the Amp hang thread... On Michael Wageners recomendation for a good 'all round' rock workhorse recording set up - I bought an Engle Savage 120 Special Edition. I have a stereo cab - one side has vintage the other 30? I aim to get an open backed 2 x 12 as well with fender blue Elnico speakers in it to complete the scene - for clean combo sounds That will do me for a while alongside amps the bands bring themselves... Just so happens the one coming in to overdub mid next week, claim to have a great Marshall 800 - I will see how it shapes up with the Engle gear.. Also - a golden eared guitar chum who has been through all the Line6 stuff reckons that the Distortion Modeler is actually worth having.. I may pick one up.. I just have a Hot Cake pedal presently..... I'd want to try one first because I'm not a huge fan of their amps or the POD and I can't imagine the distortion modeler being THAT much different. Like, has anyone seen the UPS racing commercial with Joe Walsh? He's playing a Les Paul through a Line 6 and it sounds like crap. Total cheese whiz angry bee sound, from the guy that played Funk 49 which is a great tone. There's a difference between a guitar tone and a guitar sound. The players I like have tone. Collecting a few different distortion pedals is easy. Kids are always buying and selling them. Originally posted by Jay Kahrs I don't know about that Line 6 distortion thing. I'd want to try one first because I'm not a huge fan of their amps or the POD and I can't imagine the distortion modeler being THAT much different. Jules, I tried the Line 6 distortion modeler and was pretty disappointed. It sounded harsh and fake to me. I'm a big fan of the delay and modulation modelers though. The Tech21 SansAmp Classic is infinitely more useful IMO. It works best as a front end to an amp, it kinda sucks as a direct recording source. I also have the Comportion and XXL pedals which are like a regular stompbox. A real sleeper pedal is the DOD fuzz that they made a few years ago.
